I’ve been subscribed to Illumicrate, a fabulous book subscription box, since the wonderful Winged Reviews started it. And yet, I’ve never done an unboxing, which is a travesty I’m trying to fix now. So here are the bookish goodies I received in February:

*FYI, there will be spoilers for the Feb Illumicrate box going ahead, so if you haven’t received yours yet, don’t read on!

The first item in the box was Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones, alone with a signed bookplate, bookmark and a letter from the author!

All her life, nineteen-year-old Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, mysterious Goblin King. He is the Lord of Mischief, the Ruler Underground, and the muse around which her music is composed. Yet, as Liesl helps shoulder the burden of running her family’s inn, her dreams of composition and childish fancies about the Goblin King must be set aside in favor of more practical concerns.

But when her sister Käthe is taken by the goblins, Liesl journeys to their realm to rescue her sister and return her to the world above. The Goblin King agrees to let Käthe go—for a price. The life of a maiden must be given to the land, in accordance with the old laws. A life for a life, he says. Without sacrifice, nothing good can grow. Without death, there can be no rebirth. In exchange for her sister’s freedom, Liesl offers her hand in marriage to the Goblin King. He accepts.

Down in the Underground, Liesl discovers that the Goblin King still inspires her—musically, physically, emotionally. Yet even as her talent blossoms, Liesl’s life is slowly fading away, the price she paid for becoming the Goblin King’s bride. As the two of them grow closer, they must learn just what it is they are each willing to sacrifice: her life, her music, or the end of the world.

This book sounds absolutely amazing, and I adored the heartfelt letter from the author. I think I’ll have to read this ASAP!

The next item I received was the Bare Necessities Pouch, an exclusive item made by the Literary Lifestyle Company.

I literally squealed when I saw this! The Jungle Book is one of my favourite films, and this is just so gorgeously made. I can’t wait to put this to use.

Then I received the Magic and Mischief Balm by the Bookish Serendipity Co. This smells SO good, and is also really moisturising. Bookish beauty stuff is SO up my street!

Next up was A Darker Shade of Magnets (get it? I laughed!) by Her Bookish Things. I really really loved the first book in this fabulous series, and seeing these magnets has made me want to get a move on and speed read the final two! I think the two quotes really capture Lila Bard, and the essence of the Shades of Magic series.

Then came probably my favourite item of this months box–the Newt Scamander Bookmark by Jane’s Tiny Things. I can’t help it–I’m such a massive Harry Potter nerd and I adored Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them. I will definitely be putting this bookmark to use very soon.

Finally, we got some fab extras, featuring a Following Ophelia, Flame in the Mist, Gilded Cage and a ARC of Red Sister by Mark Lawrence.

Yet again, this Illumicrate surpassed all my expectations. I absolutely love the cute surprises in each box, and also discovering more books I hadn’t heard of before. If you are considering subscribing, I highly recommend it–it’s the best gift I got myself.
