Book Haul

January Book Haul

Happy Wednesday, friends! I hope you are all having a good week! Today I am doing a book haul. I got a little spending money for Christmas, so of course I had to spend it on books! I’ve still got a few bits coming, but I’d thought I’d do a January book haul for you all today.

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 presetThe Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman

Published October 23rd 2014

Goodreads summary:

“A thrillingly reimagined fairy tale from the truly magical combination of author Neil Gaiman and illustrator Chris Riddell – weaving together a sort-of Snow White and an almost Sleeping Beauty with a thread of dark magic, which will hold readers spellbound from start to finish.

On the eve of her wedding, a young queen sets out to rescue a princess from an enchantment. She casts aside her fine wedding clothes, takes her chain mail and her sword and follows her brave dwarf retainers into the tunnels under the mountain towards the sleeping kingdom. This queen will decide her own future – and the princess who needs rescuing is not quite what she seems. Twisting together the familiar and the new, this perfectly delicious, captivating and darkly funny tale shows its creators at the peak of their talents.

Lavishly produced, packed with glorious Chris Riddell illustrations enhanced with metallic ink, this is a spectacular and magical gift.”

THIS. BOOK. IS. BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Published October 28th 2014

Goodreads summary:

“If this isn’t the definitive edition of Hansel and Gretel, it’s absolutely necessary.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Best-selling author Neil Gaiman and fine artist Lorenzo Mattotti join forces to create Hansel & Gretel, a stunning book that’s at once as familiar as a dream and as evocative as a nightmare. Mattotti’s sweeping ink illustrations capture the terror and longing found in the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Gaiman crafts an original text filled with his signature wit and pathos that is sure to become a favorite of readers everywhere, young and old.”

If you guys haven’t noticed yet, I have a slight Neil Gaiman obsession, and I am very excited to read his latest offerings!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetA Boy Called Hope by Lara Williamson

Published March 1st 2014

Goodreads summary:

“I’m Dan Hope and deep inside my head I keep a list of things I want to come true.

For example, I want my sister, Ninja Grace, to go to university at the North Pole and only come back once a year.

I want to help Sherlock Holmes solve his most daring mystery yet. And if it could be a zombie mystery, all the more exciting.

I want to be the first eleven-year-old to land on the moon.

I want my dog to stop eating the planets and throwing them up on the carpet.

And finally, the biggest dream of all, I want my dad to love me.

A Boy Called Hope is a brave, bold and funny debut about family in all its shapes and sizes.”

I have to admit, I have been craving some middle grade goodness for a while now, and A BOY CALLED HOPE just drew me in. I am very excited to read it!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetThe Midnight Dress by Karen Foxlee

Published October 8th 2013

Goodreads summary:

“Quiet misfit Rose doesn’t expect to fall in love with the sleepy beach town of Leonora. Nor does she expect to become fast friends with beautiful, vivacious Pearl Kelly, organizer of the high school float at the annual Harvest Festival parade. It’s better not to get too attached when Rose and her father live on the road, driving their caravan from one place to the next whenever her dad gets itchy feet. But Rose can’t resist the mysterious charms of the town or the popular girl, try as she might.

Pearl convinces Rose to visit Edie Baker, once a renowned dressmaker, now a rumored witch. Together Rose and Edie hand-stitch an unforgettable dress of midnight blue for Rose to wear at the Harvest Festival—a dress that will have long-lasting consequences on life in Leonora, a dress that will seal the fate of one of the girls. Karen Foxlee’s breathtaking novel weaves friendship, magic, and a murder mystery into something moving, real, and distinctly original.”

You might remember me raving about Karen Foxlee’s OPHELIA AND THE MARVELOUS BOY in my top ten reads of 2014 post, so I just had to pick up her debut novel – I am very excited to get into the mystery of this book!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetThe Mitford Girls by Mary S. Lovell

Published May 20th 2003

Goodreads summary:

“The Mitford girls were probably the most spectacular sister act of the twentieth century.”—Vogue
This is the story of a close, loving family splintered by the violent ideologies of Europe between the wars. Jessica was a Communist; Debo became the Duchess of Devonshire; Nancy was one of the best-selling novelists of her day; the ethereally beautiful Diana was the most hated woman in England; and Unity Valkyrie, born in Swastika, Alaska, would become obsessed with Adolf Hitler. 24 b/w photographs.”

I got Mary Lovells biography of the Churchill family for Christmas this year and loved it, so I had to get her biography of the infamous Mitford sisters! I am currently reading it and finding it very interesting! I am very into biographies at the moment so expect more of them in hauls!
