Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo Review

This is literally the best book I have read in a long time. I could not put it down, read it in a day and have now ordered book #2. I don’t know what to say, other then if you like multi layered high fantasy, fascinating characters and a really interesting plot then read this book.

shadow and bone“The Shadow Fold, a swathe of impenetrable darkness, crawling with monsters that feast on human flesh, is slowly destroying the once-great nation of Ravka.

Alina, a pale, lonely orphan, discovers a unique power that thrusts her into the lavish world of the kingdom’s magical elite—the Grisha. Could she be the key to unravelling the dark fabric of the Shadow Fold and setting Ravka free?

The Darkling, a creature of seductive charm and terrifying power, leader of the Grisha. If Alina is to fulfill her destiny, she must discover how to unlock her gift and face up to her dangerous attraction to him.

But what of Mal, Alina’s childhood best friend? As Alina contemplates her dazzling new future, why can’t she ever quite forget him?

Glorious. Epic. Irresistible. Romance.”

Series: The Grisha #1

Genre: High Fantasy, YA, Romance

Cover – The cover is absolutely BREATHTAKING!! So so beautiful and really original. It is drool worthy.

Characters – Alina is one of those rare first person perspectives who never gets annoying or grating. She is such a cool, strong heroine and her growth in the course of the book is amazing. She really comes into her own in such difficult circumstances and makes really hard decisions. She isn’t defined by her feelings for other people, and that is really rare in YA books. I cannot wait to see where she goes in the next book. I also have a MA-HOSSIVE book crush on both Mal and the Darkling. Mal is that irresistibly attractive playboy who obviously has a special place in his heart for Alina and the Darkling is a full on bad boy. I definitely felt for Alina – I wouldn’t know who to choose!

World building –  I am hitting the jackpot lately – reading books that have really well developed worlds behind them. I loved Shadow and Bone – I really enjoyed the Russian elements and I thought the Russia inspired culture really made the book original. I have to admit I know nothing about Russian culture and this book made me was to find out more. The details about the Grisha and the magical system was also really cool and added to the multi layered world. I was just lost in the world and I loved it.

Plot – The Plot was engaging and fast moving. There was definitely a few twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting and the ending was explosive – definitely not an anti-climax. Again, with the characters and the world building the plot was unique and entertaining.

Final Thoughts – This book is really special. Its beautifully written and such a great story. I would definitely recommend it to any fantasy fans looking for a story with an original twist.

Laura 🙂
