Book Discussion: finding time to read

book discussion fining time to read

Talking about books is one of my favourite things to do – I love seeing other peoples point, opinions and stances on book issues, especially so if that opinion is different to mine – seeing other peoples point of view is fascinating to me. So I have decided to start a semi-regular book discussion thingy-ma-bob on my blog, and just talk about all things bookish. This week, I’m talking about finding time to read, which is a topic I have seen discussed loads recently, so I thought I’d throw my two cents in!

I am at university and my exams are fast approaching. At the moment I am a hermit – I spend most days and nights revising, and reading law books and stressing and preparing. I literally have no time/effort to read, because at the end of the day I am exhausted. One of the points made in this discussion is that if you love something, you will make time. Now most of the year I agree with this statement. At exam times however, I don’t. I love books, but I can’t make time for them at the moment.

I think its a bit like having a boyfriend at exam time. You want to spend time with him, but you really should be focusing on studying. He gets angry, and then you’re annoyed with him for not realising that you need to pass otherwise your life will be OVER and then tension grows and grows and then you break up. Books are my boyfriend, and we are on a break.

It’s not that I don’t want to read, in fact, at the moment when anyone posts a great review or adds a book I want to read to their Goodreads I get seriously jealous. I am desperate to read for a entire day again. But at the moment, it would be stupid of me to do that.

I think the point I’m trying to make is that sometimes I have bigger priorities then reading. That doesn’t mean I love it any less. Sometimes, something’s gotta give. I know that me and books will be getting back together very soon, but at the moment I will have to make do without them.

How do you make time to read? Do you ever have NO time whatsoever to read?

Laura 🙂

  1. I like to read while I eat breakfast, and when I am busy with work and school this is the only time it happens, or else while winding down before bed. It’s annoying when you can only read 5-10 pages a day of something that you have to forget about while you study! Good luck with your exams 🙂

    1. Thank you! Ooh reading at breakfast – I hadn’t thought of that!! Yeah that gets to me – I like to read loads of pages per day!!

  2. I was the same when I was doing exams. You’ll hate me for saying this but you do need some relaxation time as well though and relaxing with a book is a good idea sometimes! But if you don’t have time to read then it’s not the end of the world. In fact when your exams are over you’ll love having time to just sit and read a book. It will feel luxurious!

    1. I know – I CANNOT wait till my exams are over!! I will read and read and read! Lol – good tip though, I definitely stress myself out too much, I do need to breath and relax sometimes!

  3. I think it’s very normal to have moments in life where you just don’t feel as if you can make time for certain things. I know everyone ever always says that if you really want something you make time for it. But it’s actually just about prioritizing, not just doing what you want when you want to (in my opinion). And right now you are just putting exams over reading and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

  4. Some months I’ll be too busy to even look at a book due to crazy amounts of work, but I always try to set aside a little time to read because it helps me deal with the stress. I also like to take a book with me wherever I go because you never know when you can find some time to read. Great post!
